My rental car for a work trip to Salt Lake was supposed to be a full size sedan, and I had hoped for a Charger Scat Pack like last time, but nope. F-150 Platinum with the Coyote V8 and the 10 speed transmission. It drives great on the freeway and I averaged 19.1 MPG over 400ish miles.

A crew cab s
hortbed pickup IS a sedan nowadays.

I had a very similar F150 as a rental not too long ago, I found the whole thing absurdly too-big in every way. It did cruise well on the highway with decent mileage, but so does a sedan.

Surprised a rental fleet has a platinum trim F150

Im hoping this is what we end up with when we rent a car to go to Canada. Either this or a new expedition

Probably not the right vehicle for you, it’s for someone who does stuff maybe the sedan is the best for.

The 2.7L Ecoboost is actually more fun than the Coyote. Faster in just about every way, including when towing. Negative is the sound, sounds like a V6 sedan. Which ironically it’s kinda been replacing.

This happened to me in NC. Good thing it was a 5 day trip because it took me a day or two relearning how to drive.

I had one a few weeks ago. The side window was smashed by someone who thought I was hiding something valuable. I really enjoyed the truck. It was a lot more comfortable than the Silverado the rental company replaced it with.

Completely agree, I bought the 2+2. I f your commute is suburban and under 25mi round trip, it's the perfect daily.

They have it because they can charge a truckload of money when people specifically ask for one..

You and I both know that
optimistically
10% of truck owners use them for truck stuff.

We meet again....
I disagree, but you know that already.
Have you seen the new F150 with the 3.5 from the raptor? Runs 13's at over 100, stock. Too bad they crippled the towing with dumb options.
BTW, It’s also worth noting the the V8 gets better fuel economy than the 2.7 when towing: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.tfltruck.com/2019/05/ford-f-150-v8-vs-2-7l-turbo-v6-towing-mpg-test-if-you-want-the-best-f-150-fuel-economy-buy-this-truck-video/amp/

Enjoy it. It's pretty quick and arguably the quickest F150 after the Lightning (despite what someone else thinks, ha)

So I guess TFLD did another comparison recently and the 2.7 edged out the 5.0... color me surprised. BUT, they did mention that the higher elevation played a small part. That 0-60 for the V8 is the worst I've seen.

The 2.7,3.5 and 5.0 are all stupid fast for a truck. I test drove them all. But the 3.5 delivers down low, where you use it most and will still rip up top . If Ford offers the 3.5HO in a non Raptor Supercab I’ll trade in my 15 3.5EB Lariat tomorrow.

Good news! They do offer the 3.5HO in a non-raptor.
The bad news? It’s only available in the $70K limited. It also has stupid big wheels and limited gearing options and packages so it can’t tow much.
I tow about 9k with my v8. I think I would go 3.5 if I did it over again. But I do like the linear pull of the v8. I had grown tired of turbo 6's, but I think I'd go back again.

Only in ‘Murica would something like this be a random upgrade for a rental car for one person.

The new Expedition is very good. The 3.5L Ecoboost gen 2 with the 10 speed transmission is a great combo.

My local Budget fleet has some neat stuff. They had a Ram PowerWagon a while back, and some Focus ST, Scat Pack Chargers more recently.

I was hoping it would have the 3.5 EB. The new Transit we are looking to buy next year has the gen 1 EB and the new 10 speed auto and I wanted to try it out before buying. The Coyote makes all the right sounds, though.

I was waiting for you :) Glad to hear from you again.
Agreed! Though I will mention that same test from TFL truck noted the 2.7L had noticeably better acceleration on the freeway, both when towing 5000 lbs and when unloaded compared to the 5.0L.
It also a $1000 cheaper engine (compared to the 5.0L), while being (at this test) with better unloaded mpg.
The only negative was that the mpg was 1 mpg down when loaded compared to the 5.0L. Honestly, not bad for the budget Ecoboost option that is cheaper than the 5.0L.

Yup, I think it’s the elevation and turbos, especially for the gas motors. I mentioned that in our last discussion that TFL test probably do bias the ecoboost due to location.

Absolutely, but even if it’s just part of the time, probably worth it for most folks who buy them.
Factor in these modern trucks get pretty decent (not great) mpg while retaining high resale value, even during high gas prices, makes it a good choice for a lot of people.

I would consider the 2.7 down the road if it could tow a little more. Our current trailer setup is roughly 9000 lbs and the truck is rated for 10,600. So really the only imagine in the F150 range are the V8, 3.5, and baby diesel.

I agree on that. The baby diesel I’m not sure about just yet. But I know Ford is adding it to more lower trims.

We used to have a truck, then I realized my minivan + trailer would do everything the truck did, while being more comfortable, more agile, and getting better fuel economy....

After driving a handful of EB powered trucks (both 3.5 and 2.7), I’ll take the 5.0 anyday. It may not be “as fast”, but it delivers smooth/seamless power with zero lag, and returns better real world mileage.

Unless your transit is the high top with the duallies, you can spin those tires with that ecoboost.
